The United Faculty of the Contra Costa Community College District (UF) conducts regular elections to ensure fair and democratic representation of faculty at all three colleges: Contra Costa College (CCC), Diablo Valley College (DVC), and Los Medanos College (LMC).
These elections allow members to choose leaders who will represent faculty in areas such as contract negotiations, workplace protections, and shared governance. The UF Executive Board is composed of representatives elected by their colleagues and guided by the principles outlined in the UF Constitution.
Elections are governed by Article VII of the UF Constitution and are held each February and October, or whenever vacancies arise. All members of UF are encouraged to participate.
1. Call for Nominations
Before each election, the UF Office sends out a call for nominations. Any eligible member can run for office with the support of at least 10 signatures from fellow UF members.
2. Candidate Statements Collected and Shared
Candidates submit written statements describing their experience, values, and goals. These are shared with members to help inform voting decisions. Sometimes, a candidate forum is hosted or recorded for additional transparency.
3. Voting Eligibility Confirmed
Only current UF members from the college involved in the election may vote. For example, a CCC election is limited to UF members at CCC.
4. Voting Timeline Announced
UF announces the voting period, which usually lasts about two weeks. A firm deadline is given, such as noon on October 31. Notices are shared through email and other union communications.
5. Secure Voting Links Sent
Each eligible member receives a unique and secure voting link by email. This ensures that each member may vote only once.
If a member does not receive a voting link, they should contact the UF Office at (925) 680-1771 or email uf@uf4cd.org. Votes can also be submitted by phone or email if needed.
6. Voting and Absentee Options
Members may vote electronically or request an absentee ballot if they are unable to access the online system. It is each member’s responsibility to acquire and return their ballot before the deadline. Proxy voting and write-in votes are not allowed.
7. Ballots Counted and Verified
After the deadline, the UF President, Executive Board, or assigned designees count and verify all ballots following procedures that uphold transparency and fairness.
8. Results Announced
For the office of President, the winning candidate must receive a majority of votes. For Executive Board seats, winners are determined by plurality. A runoff may be held in the case of a tie or if no presidential candidate receives a majority.
Results are shared with members by email and posted on the UF website.
9. Terms and Transitions
Elected officers and representatives begin their two-year terms at the start of the following semester. Terms are staggered so that leadership continuity is maintained. Any vacancies are filled by special election or temporary appointment, following procedures in the UF Constitution.
The UF Executive Board includes positions for both full-time and part-time faculty from each 4CD college. The number of positions are based on the size of each college’s UF membership. The Executive Board also includes:
